Selecting Equipment

Once the astro-bug bites you the urge to buy equipment can become addicting. Don’t fall into this trap. One of the worst things one can do is to spend a lot of money on equipment you don’t need or have equipment you don’t know how to use. The best advice I can give anyone is to go to a star party. Also, if you are fortunate enough to live in an area that has an astronomy club, by all means, join. This is where you will gain the most knowledge in the shortest amount of time, not to mention the variety of friends you will meet. Another area to pursue is the Internet. The Internet has many sites where you can join groups with the same interest. This is a great place to gain a tremendous amount of knowledge. Some links good links to discussion groups: LX-90, Astro-imager. There are numerous others.

Getting into astronomy can be as inexpensive or as expensive as you desire. The best part is you can start off with little outlay and add on as your interest grows. Once you have all the equipment you desire (if that is possible) viewing the heavens only costs you time. That can be time spent alone or very precious time with your family. Add to this the knowledge you will gain and you can’t find a better hobby to invest your time.
